Planned Giving

Your Conservation Legacy

Planning your estate is a great way to achieve your philanthropic goals.  Please take a moment to review some of the options available to leave a conservation legacy through the Waterford Land Trust:

Bequests:  Leave Waterford Land Trust (WLT) a gift through your will or revocable living trust to receive an estate tax deduction.

Stewardship Endowment:  Monies to maintain and defend (legal) our lands.

Gift of Land:  Giving your land to the Waterford Land Trust is one of the most generous legacies you can leave to future generations.  There are a variety of ways you can donate your property and we would be happy to assist you in deciding which will most benefit you and your land in the long term.

  • Ensure permanent protection of the property;
  • Provide you with a charitable income tax deduction for the full fair market value of the land;
  • Eliminate capital gains tax on appreciated value, otherwise payable if you sold the property;
  • Remove the property from your taxable estate;
  • Release you from the expense and responsibility of managing the property;
  • Provide long-term financial support for the Trust.

Gifts of Stock:  You can make a gift of appreciated securities—publicly traded stocks, bonds, and mutual fund shares while possibly avoiding capital gains tax and deriving other tax benefits.

Name Waterford Land Trust as a Beneficiary: Designate WLT as a beneficiary of your retirement, pension plan, or life insurance policy.

A Donor-Advised Fund (DAF):  is a charitable investment account that donors set up with a sponsoring organization for the sole purpose of supporting charities.  Donor-advised funds are gaining in popularity as they are becoming one of the easiest, and most tax-savvy ways to give to charity.

Qualified Charitable Distribution:  70 ½ or older? Make distributions from an IRA directly to WLT to avoid paying taxes.

Always seek professional assistance when you consider your options as Waterford Land Trust does not offer legal, tax, or financial advice.  Please consult your attorney, accountant, or financial adviser for guidance.
