Nathaniel Hempstead Nature Preserve

Address: 55 Pember Road, Waterford

Acquired: 2023
Size: 16.0 acres

History

Donated to the Waterford Land Trust by Dr. David Bingham, the property lies on a quite historic and abandoned road in the extreme northwest corner of Waterford. Dr. Bingham asked the property be named for Nathaniel Hempstead of New London who was an engineer and designed the roadway as a gateway to Hartford. Because the Town abandoned the road, property owners keep it open, however, the road is rock and dirt, not suitable for passage by most vehicles with a low ground clearance.

Property Highlights

Although there are no defined hiking trails as of yet, one can park on an old tractor path and walk to the top of the hill. No homes nearby makes this a peaceful and secluded area. The property boundaries are not marked. Despite heavy oak and ash damage from invasive insects, there are scattered stands of healthy Chestnut Oak. Visitors are cautioned to be vigilant to the potential for falling limbs from dead trees.

Access

For those who wish to visit the property, it’s possible to park one vehicle on an old tractor path. A hike or bike ride on Pember Road will lead you through areas with stone foundations and walls. The adjoining properties are private so please be careful where you travel.
